The game has changed its working title into Zombies Through Time and was planned to have 6 worlds with 3 stages in each. Due to PSP's lack of multiplayer support, the game was revamped into a single player arcade game.
Due to poor sales of first three Halfbrick Fridays games, the original idea was scrapped until Sony offered Halfbrick to port their Halfbrick Fridays games to PlayStation Portable as part of the new "minis" collection. The game also had a focus on multiplayer up to 4 players. Halfbrick Zombies was intended to be a twin-stick shooter with as much chaos on the screen as possible, inspired by Smash TV. The game was originally called Halfbrick Zombies and intended to be the fourth Halfbrick Fridays game for Xbox 360, alongside Blast Off, Echoes and Rocket Racing. The idea for Zombie-based game has first originated through Halfbrick Fridays - Halfbrick's prototyping Game Jam from 2009. The game has additional "Horde Mode", which is the equivalent of an endless mode, and lasts until Barry runs out of health. Player's goal in the Story mode is to defeat enough zombies to move on to the next stage. The player has additional secondary weapons, used to more efficiently wipe out hordes of zombies, but are limited in usage. Barry always starts with the basic gun, but can collect special weapons, such as the Shotgun, SMG and Flamethrower from the crates, which randomly drop onto the map.
Player has to use Left stick to move Barry, while the Right stick (Square, Triangle, X and O buttons in PSP version) is responsible for the direction Barry is aiming at. The game plays as a typical twin-stick shooter.
